Think of the first words of a baby, or the first steps of a toddler. What about someone’s first car or job? Consider even one’s first time leaving home. In our lives, we have learned that the “first anything” holds great significance. I’d like to submit to us that the first few words of the Bible are crucially important and extremely special. Genesis chapter 1:1 says “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.” The first four words are especially paramount. "In the beginning God". The fourth word introduces us to the most important person in the Bible, aka the most important person in the world; God! God designed for us to meet Him the moment we open scripture. Our Heavenly Father makes it abundantly clear that He has been here from before time began. Right in these first four words, God establishes that He is the Alpha- the beginning of all things. In this first verse of the Bible, God introduces Himself to us as the Creator of all things. Before the heavens and the earth, God was there. Before the birds, the fish, us, sin, and pain… God. Was. There. God is thee source. As it says in James 1:17, every good and perfect gift comes from God. Just as He was there at the beginning of the world, He was there when you took your first breath. Of course He was there before that too! God is our source, our beginning, and all that we need is in Him. Our joy, peace, love, protection, and purpose are all found in Him. What I believe to be so beautiful is that God is faithful. He was there at the beginning and He will be there till the very end. Jesus said in Matthew 28:20 that He will be with us till the end of the age. What’s more is that He’s also right here, in the right now. As we call on His name, our great God is here with us. It may be silent, maybe even dark, but just as He was in the beginning, so He is right now; there.
